Go Ape
We’re the UK’s no.1 forest adventure with 27 adventures UK wide. It started with our classic ‘tree top adventure’ and now we’re branching out. You can now get off the beaten track on our ‘forest segways’, enjoy our ‘Junior Tree Top Adventure’ or get on our bikes in one of the UK’s most beautiful forests. Our tree top adventure uses a unique Go Ape recipe; Breathtaking scenery; smattering of tree-top wires, crossings & wind-in-your-face zip wires; finished off with a dose of people in search of their inner Tarzan. We kit people out, give them a safety briefing and training and let them out into the forest canopy, free to swing in the trees. Of course, instructors are always on hand. The result is spectacular. We have adventures all over the country for you to enjoy and we’ve put together a whole heap of frequently asked questions, so you can see what it’s all about. Oh and if you want to bring your whole tribe, our events team can organise an unforgettable team building event for 15 – 280 people. Our forest doors open from February – November. It varies from adventure to adventure so it’s best to check where you want to Go Ape? It’s the forest adventure that everyone is talking about!

National Slate Museum
The former Oil Store, beyond the Engineer’s House, today houses a remarkable 3-D presentation - To Steal a Mountain. Harnessing the latest 21st century technology, it tells the story of the quarry’s development as pictures, words and music combine in a fascinating introduction to the quarryman’s world. People have been quarrying slate in north Wales for over 1,800 years. Slates were used to build parts of the Roman fort in Segontium in Caernarfon, and in Edward I's castle at Conwy. But it was with the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century that the slate industry really took off. As small villages such as Manchester exploded into large towns and then cities with the coming of mills and factories, there was an enormous demand for slates to roof the long terraces of houses built as homes for the workers – as well as the foundries and factories themselves. In 1787 the ‘Great New Quarry’ of Dinorwig was opened on the slopes between the present village of Dinorwig and Llyn Peris. By the 1870s Dinorwig quarry employed over 3,000 men. Slate had become one of Wales's most important industries. Wales produced over four-fifths of all British slates in this period, with Caernarfonshire the biggest producer among all Welsh counties. In 1882 the county's quarries produced over 280,000 tons of finished roofing slates, and in 1898 the slate trade in Wales as a whole reached its peak with 17,000 men producing 485,000 tons of slate. It’s a story full of hope and magic as well as sadness and poverty. There are regular showings of the To Steal a Mountain presentation in Welsh, French and German as well as English. Find out more about quarry life and the history of Dinorwig including a slate industry timeline.

We offer solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources.
We demonstrate practical ways of addressing these problems. Leading by example, we aim to show that living more sustainably is not only easy to attain but can provide a better quality of life.

Tonnau
Tonnau Art Gallery can be found in the centre of the old market town of Pwllheli, which is a seaside port in north-western Wales dating back at least 800 years. It was natural for Llio Meirion and Myrddin ap Dafydd the owners to give a ‘sea theme’ to the gallery when opening its doors for the first time in 2006. At Tonnau you will always find a broad range of contemporary work – original paintings, textiles, photographs, greeting cards, and jewellery. Our aim is to make high quality Welsh creative talents accessible to all, making that experience as enjoyable and attractive as possible. Tonnau is located in a traditional long building in Penlan Street, Pwllheli (which used to be a paint shop and a woollen mill), with plenty of well lit exhibiting space. With groups of four artists presenting new exhibitions which are changed three times a year, there is always something new to enjoy at Tonnau regularly. A Tea Room at the back of the building ensures that every visit is a relaxing experience. Many of the artists on our books accept commissions –therefore if you cannot find exactly what you are looking for at the gallery, ask a member of staff about commission work. You can purchase many items on our Online Shop, but if you can call in, we hope you will enjoy the friendly and informal atmosphere

Llechwedd Slate Caverns
The search for slate at Llechwedd took J.W.Greaves to the brink of financial disaster. In 1849, having already spent £25,000 on his exploration of Llechwedd land, the banks refused to lend him anymore money with which to pay his men. Luckily for Greaves a handful of loyal men who shared his faith in the presence of slate continued working without pay and a few weeks later they were rewarded with the discovery of the now-famous ‘Old Merioneth Vein’. Five lucrative slate beds were discovered sandwiched between hard layers of chert running diagonally down from the surface. It was this 30 degree angle of the slate bed that meant the slate miners created the impressive caverns that you can visit today. A skilled slate miner would be able to use the hard chert to form the roof of a chamber and leave enough slate as supporting pillars between chambers. Once the slate had been dressed in the slate-slabbing mills of Llechwedd they would travel down the incline that can be seen from the Victorian Village to the Ffestiniog Railway. Here they were transported to Porthmadog and Greaves’ personal wharf for shipping far and wide. Llechwedd Slate Caverns as you see it today was opened to the public in 1972 but mining operations still take place to this day by Greaves Welsh Slate Company Ltd.

Shell Island
Shell Island has three bathing beaches. Two small bathing beaches that are only available when the tide is out and the main Bathing beach at the south end of the 'Island' that runs for 6 miles down to Barmouth. The South bathing beach is backed by some of the tallest sand dunes in Wales. The North beach is known as the dinghy beach as it is possible to launch small dinghies from it. The small central beach is the quietest and nestles amongst the rocky foreshore unnoticed by most people. In high summer these bathing beaches are probably the most popular private beaches along the coast. The shell beach runs for most of the length of the 'Island'. The rocky foreshore helps to retain the shells from being washed further along. The Estuary is a varied beach made up of mudflats, marsh, and streams. It becomes a popular place for children to explore. Fishermen, find bait. Ornithologists discover the area is rich in bird life. When the tide is up in the Estuary is ideal for sailboards, canoes and dinghies

Caerau Uchaf
Caerau Uchaf has the highest private garden open to the public in North Wales at over 1000 ft. The Gardens were started in 1994 and are being added to all of the time. They are owned by Toby and Stephanie Hickish of Summers Gardens Ltd. an award winning Garden Design and Landscaping Company, always happy to give advice or talk to keen gardeners. "We build Show Gardens at RHS Shows at Tatton Park or Hampton Court Palace. The advantage of this is that we are able to salvage plants and structures from these gardens to use ourselves. The gardens have developed quite quickly with some interesting collections of plants as a result of this and the huge advantage of having a construction team on tap!" The Café is manned during the peak seasons and informally at all other times. We offer Teas, Homemade Cakes and Pastries and also a home cooked Lunchtime menu in the main season. We have a small Nursery and aim to increase Plant Sales and gifts over the coming year.
